A back plate is the normally rectangular shaped plate that fits on the door and to which the door handle is mounted. If there is a locking mechanism on the door, the back plate will hide the holes needed to fit the lock. If there is a key to the lock, the back plate will also have a key hole to where the key in inserted. These plates have both a functional purpose – they hide all the holes in the door near the handles and also protect the wood from scratches made by keys being put in the keyhole as well and complementing the looks of the handle.

There are plates for door handles, light switches, lighting fixtures, and support plates you never even see. But the ones to be discussed here are the decorative kind. The ones you either notice or not when you enter a room. Most homes have the plastic back plates for the light switches, and the doorknobs and handles have the standard non-descriptive plates. However, when decorating a room, attention to detail is important if you want to achieve something special. And the visible back plates are part of the attention to detail. Maybe you don’t notice the plain plastic ones, you are so used to seeing them in most homes. They add that special little touch to a beautifully decorated room. The same goes for a door with an ornate door handle and a matching plate. Somehow that makes everything complete. Have fun, get on the web and see what is available. Maybe you’ll find just that special item your house is missing.
