You know the piece of metal that is behind your doorknobs? It is called a backplate, and if you are replacing your doorknobs, you should really consider purchasing a complete set, so everything matches. After all, you don’t want to have a brass doorknob with a plastic back plate. You can find all kinds of kits at your local hardware store or in department store hardware sections.
An exception to this rule is antique backplates. You can dress up an old doorknob with an even older backplate! A great place to find these is at antique stores and markets, and you can often get them for dirt cheap!

Backplates are the pieces of metal attached to the back of a handle. They can be flat or carved – and they can make all the difference in the first impression a visitor gets of your home. Backplates can merely be decorative or they can anchor the knob to the door. They can also be used for knockers. The design of backplates can unify the design of your home when used on interior doors. When considering backplates, be sure the ones in the bedroom, living room and kitchen all match. The bathroom does not have to be uniform. The best backplates are ones that have their own screws, so they are not dependent on the doorknob for stability.

Backplates have a dual function. They fix knobs and handles firmly to cabinets and drawers. They also make doors, cabinets, drawers, towel racks and towel hooks look visually appealing. If you want to add a touch of class to your kitchen cabinetry, you can install them on your cabinets and drawers. This is a simple do-it-yourself project if you know how to use a screw driver.
First you must select the right backplate. Backplates are mostly made of metal, and come in various finishes. If you have ivory colored furniture, you can choose satin nickel or stainless steel backplates. For honey colored cabinets, brass or oil-rubbed bronze ones will look great.

Take a look at the back plates on your cabinets and your drawers. How do they look? Are they shiny or are they dull? Have years of dirt and grime gathered on them? So many people replace the handles and the knobs on their cabinets and drawers and don’t give a second thought to the back plates. Now is the time to give them some attention and to replace them, because if they are left when the knobs and handles are replaced, this will make them dull as well.
